BELGRADE, Oct 6 (Reuters) – On Tuesday, drones sank one ship and damaged another in the Black Sea near Bulgaria, according to local news sources.

The reports indicate that both vessels were merchant ships. It is still unclear if there were any injuries or fatalities, but a rescue operation is currently in progress.

The office of President Iliana Iotova has confirmed the drone attack took place in this NATO member country, though they did not share further details.

Responsibility for the attack remains unknown, and the government has chosen not to comment on the matter.

Prime Minister Rumen Radev is holding a meeting today with key ministries and security services about the incident and is expected to make a statement soon.

This drone attack follows a recent incident in which two individuals lost their lives on a ship in the Black Sea, just outside Romania's territorial waters.

Since the start of the Ukraine-Russia war four years ago, European countries have experienced breaches of their airspace by Russian drones, as well as the presence of mines in the Black Sea affecting crucial trade and energy routes.
